Cold air arrives 3 - 5 days earlier than average
Today (September 7), in the Chinese region, there is a cold air mass moving towards our country.
From about September 9 - 11, this cold air mass is likely to affect the northern provinces, the intensity of the early season cold air mass is forecast to be not too strong. Under the impact of the cold air mass in the period from the night of September 9 to September 10, the northern provinces are likely to have rain, showers, in some places moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms; then the rain will decrease rapidly.
According to Mr. Khiem, under the impact of the early-season cold air from September 10-12, the highest daily temperature in the North will drop below 33 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature at night and in the morning will drop below 25 degrees Celsius. In the midland and mountainous areas, the lowest temperature is likely to be below 23 degrees Celsius.
This is the first cold air wave affecting our country in the autumn of 2026-2027. On average, the first cold air wave falls around September 12 - October 4. The earliest cold air wave occurred on August 16, 2003. Thus, if cold air is welcomed on September 9 - 10, 2026, it will be about 3 - 5 days earlier than the average" - Mr. Khiem analyzed.
East Sea is highly likely to welcome a low pressure, Central region heavy rain
Representatives of the meteorological agency added that, in addition to the cold air from September 9, a tropical convergence zone has formed in the East Sea area, with its axis passing through the Central Central region.
It is forecasted that in the period of September 12-13, a tropical depression is highly likely to form on the central area of the East Sea (with a probability of about 70 - 80%; then it is likely to strengthen into a storm with a probability of about 30-40%) on the intertropical convergence zone.
With the scenario of tropical depression/storm appearing combined with the influence of cold air and the intertropical convergence zone, it is forecast that from about September 10-17, 2026, in the Central provinces, there is a high possibility of a widespread period of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by a high risk of tornadoes, lightning, flash floods, landslides and localized flooding" - Mr. Khiem said.
Mr. Mai Van Khiem said that according to current forecast data, there are 2 scenarios of rain:
Scenario 1 (probability 60-70%): Heavy rain in the Central region starts from September 10 and lasts until September 16, the center of rain is the area from Ha Tinh to Gia Lai.
Scenario 2 (probability 30-40%): Heavy rain in the Central region starts from around September 14th and lasts until around September 17th, the rain center is concentrated in the area from Nghe An to Hue city.
In addition, it is forecasted that in the period from September 9 - 12, 2026, due to the southwest monsoon potential to strengthen strong activity, thunderstorms will appear more in the Central Highlands and Southern regions.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and Hydro-Meteorological Stations will continue to closely monitor and regularly update forecast information so that people and local authorities can promptly have response plans.
