Currently, the flood situation in the North is still ongoing. At noon on September 11, Mr. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Directorate of Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that according to the latest data updated at 12:00 on September 11, from the night of September 10 to the morning of September 11, most of the mountainous and midland areas of the North had less rainfall than the previous 2 days.
From dawn on September 11 until now, rainfall has been concentrated in the delta region, Northeast, and North Central regions.
"It is forecasted that from now until September 12, rain will continue in the above areas. After September 12, the rain situation will show signs of decreasing," said Mr. Khiem.
Regarding the flood situation on the Red River in Hanoi, Mr. Vu Duc Long - Director of the Department of Hydrometeorological Forecasting Management, Directorate of Hydrometeorology - said that before heavy rains, the meteorological agency often issues flood warning bulletins in the Hanoi area.
However, in recent days, many social networking sites have spread warnings about flooding in Hanoi's inner city due to the Red River, causing many people to misunderstand its nature.
Mr. Vu Duc Long further analyzed that for floods on the Red River above alert level 2 like this afternoon, flood water levels and inundation only occur in areas outside the dike. For example, in the Hoan Kiem area, areas such as Phuc Tan, Phuc Xa,... cannot flood into the inner city.
"Even in the event that the flood on the Red River reaches level 3, with the design of the Red River dike, Hanoi's inner city is unlikely to be flooded," said Mr. Long.
Mr. Vu Duc Long added that there is currently some positive information that the water level of the Thao River in Lao Cai and Yen Bai has peaked and is decreasing. Along with that, the Hoa Binh hydropower reservoir has closed one more spillway gate, and the Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoir has closed one more spillway gate, helping to reduce the amount of water from upstream to downstream.
However, the disadvantage still exists that although the flood water level on Thao River has decreased, it is still high. In the downstream and delta areas, most stations in the river basin are at alert level 3, and some rivers have reached historic flood levels. The water level is high, so the drainage capacity will be slow, so the flooding will last for the next 2-3 days.
Director of the Department of Hydrometeorological Forecasting recommends that people, especially those living in riverside areas, regularly monitor forecasts from the National Hydrometeorological Center to grasp developments of floods and storms and take timely response measures.
In addition, people also need to strictly follow the recommendations, warnings, and evacuation of local authorities during the current complicated flood season.
