According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, last night and this morning (May 20), the Northern and North Central regions had moderate rain, heavy rain, locally very heavy rain; the Northern Central Highlands area had scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain.
Rainfall from 7:00 p.m. on May 19 to 8:00 a.m. on May 20, locally in some places is over 130mm such as the following monitoring station: Tan Pheo (Phu Tho) 153.2mm, Lang Can 1 (Tuyen Quang) 139.8mm, Tho Dan (Thanh Hoa) 145.2mm...
Ms. Pham Thi Cham, Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that the cause of this rainfall is due to the influence of the wind convergence zone from the altitude of 1500 - 5000m, combined with the activity of the southeast wind zone pushing moisture from the sea into the mainland.
The meteorological agency has forecast heavy rain developments in the next 24 - 48 hours in many areas.

The Northeast region, Southern Lao Cai, Southern Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An from May 20 to May 21, are forecast to have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall of 50 - 100mm, locally over 150mm, especially the Northeast region 70 - 150mm, locally over 200mm.
Warning of the risk of heavy rain with rainfall greater than 100mm within 3 hours.
Other areas of the Northern region on the day and night of May 20, are forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms with rainfall of 10-30mm, locally heavy rain over 80mm.
According to a representative of the Weather Forecasting Department, it is forecast that from the night of May 21, widespread heavy rain in the Northern region is likely to end.
The meteorological agency warns that thunderstorms are likely to occur with tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
Warning level of natural disaster risk due to heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, and hail is level 1, especially Quang Ninh province level 2.
Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas in urban and industrial areas. Especially in recent days, the Northern mountainous region has continuously had thunderstorms, causing the soil and rocks to be waterlogged enough, and the structure to become loose. When there are more heavy rains, the risk of flash floods and landslides in this area is very high, so people need to be very vigilant" - Ms. Cham warned.
The Southern region in the evening and evening of May 20, is forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms with rainfall of 10 - 30mm, locally heavy rain over 50mm.
Thunderstorms are accompanied by dangerous weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
However, the forecast rain time is in the late afternoon and evening, and during the day it is still sunny and relatively hot, with the highest daily temperature commonly from 31 - 34 degrees C, some places also experience localized heat with the highest daily temperature reaching over 35 degrees C" - Ms. Cham noted.
