Ms. Pham Thi Cham, Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that in recent days, many provinces and cities in the Northern region have continuously had thunderstorms, and some places have recorded quite heavy rainfall.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, today (May 19), in the Northeast and Southern regions there are scattered showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain. Rainfall calculated from 7 am to 3 pm on the 19th. 5 locally over 50mm such as station: Xuan Dai (Phu Tho) 57mm, Minh Tien (Thai Nguyen) 64.4mm,...
From tonight (May 19), due to the influence of the wind convergence zone from the altitude of 1500-5000m, combined with the activity of the southeast wind zone pushing moisture from the sea into the mainland, the Northern region and the two provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will experience moderate to heavy rain on a large scale" - Ms. Cham analyzed the causes of the upcoming rain.
According to a representative of the Weather Forecast Department, heavy rain is forecast to last from the night of May 19 to the end of May 21 with a common total rainfall of 60 - 120mm, locally there are places with very heavy rain over 250mm.

Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas in urban and industrial areas. Especially in recent days, the Northern mountainous region has continuously had thunderstorms, causing the soil and rocks to be waterlogged enough, and the structure to become loose. If there are more heavy rains, the risk of flash floods and landslides in this area is very high, so people need to be very vigilant" - Ms. Cham warned.
Ms. Cham added that the area from Ha Tinh inwards to the South, today May 19 and the next two days are also forecast to have thunderstorms, locally with heavy rain over 80mm/24h; especially the Central Highlands area is likely to have very heavy rain over 100mm/24h.
Thunderstorms are accompanied by dangerous weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
However, the forecast rain time is in the late afternoon and night, and during the day it is still sunny and relatively hot, with the highest daily temperature commonly from 31 - 34 degrees C, some places also experience localized heat with the highest daily temperature reaching over 35 degrees C" - Ms. Cham noted.
Notes when passing through underground areas, spillways, streams or flooded road sections during rain and floods:
1. Seriously comply with barriers, warning signs and instructions from functional forces. Absolutely do not overtake on your own when there is a danger warning.
2. In case there are no forces on duty at checkpoints or barriers, drivers must proactively stop to observe and assess the reality before deciding to move.
3. Proactively find a safer alternative route instead of trying to overcome dangerous flooding points.
4. Do not follow the psychology of crowds or see others overcome and subjectively follow.
5. With motorbikes, absolutely do not try to walk through fast-flowing water because it is very easy to slip and get swept away.
6. For cars, if the water has risen near the car door or the current is strong, you need to quickly turn around, do not try to accelerate to overtake.
