More than 100 people died and went missing, economic damage of about VND13,000 billion due to floods

By 6:00 p.m. on November 23, floods in the Central and Central Highlands regions had left 102 people dead and missing, hundreds of thousands of houses flooded and damaged.

According to the report of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention, as of the evening of November 23, floods and landslides have caused heavy damage to people. The total number of dead and missing people in the whole region is 102. Of which, 91 people have died and 11 people are still missing.

Dak Lak has 63 deaths and 8 missing people. Of which, Khanh Hoa recorded 15 people. Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Da Nang, Quang Tri, and Hue provinces also recorded many deaths.

Currently, 221 houses collapsed, 933 houses were damaged and more than 200,000 houses were flooded. Dak Lak province has 150,000 flooded houses; Khanh Hoa with more than 30,000 houses. By the afternoon of November 23, the water had receded in many places, however, Dak Lak still had 2 communes and Lam Dong had 127 households partially flooded.

More than 82,000 hectares of rice, crops and more than 117,000 hectares of perennial crops were damaged. The number of dead and swept away livestock and poultry is up to 3,339,352. Dak Lak alone lost 3.2 million livestock and poultry; Khanh Hoa suffered nearly 95,000 losses.

Initial preliminary estimates show that the total economic damage is VND13,078 billion. The heaviest of which are Dak Lak (VND 5,330 billion) and Khanh Hoa (VND 5,000 billion).

According to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, floods on the Krong Ana rivers (Dak Lak), Dinh Ninh Hoa river (Khanh Hoa), Dong Nai river are receding. However, the crepok River (Dak Lak) is still complicated, the water level at Ban Don station at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon reached 178.14m, exceeding the Warning level of 3 to 4.14m and is fluctuating at a high level.

From the evening of November 23 to the morning of November 25, Hue City, Da Nang and the East of Quang Ngai will have moderate to heavy rain (50-100mm, some places over 200mm).

National Highways 20 and 27C through Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa still have 17 landslides causing congestion. The North-South railway line through Phu Yen was affected by the flood discharge of Song Ba Ha hydropower plant, the railway industry had to transfer passengers by car for the 60km section from Gia Station to Tuy Hoa Station.

Currently, there are 258,045 households without power, concentrated in Dak Lak (more than 162,000 households) and Khanh Hoa (more than 75,000 households). More than 340 BTS stations lost connection, causing communication in many communes to be interrupted.

Faced with the urgent situation, early in the morning of November 23, while working in South Africa, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired an online meeting with the Government Standing Committee and leaders of 4 provinces (Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong).

Implementing the direction of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc signed Decision No. 2572/QD-TTg to urgently support 1,100 billion VND from the central budget reserve for localities to overcome the consequences (Dak Lak 500 billion, Lam Dong 300 billion, Khanh Hoa and Gia Lai 150 billion VND each province).

At the same time, the Ministry of Finance immediately issued 4,000 tons of national reserve rice to relieve hunger to people in flooded areas (2,000 tons in Dak Lak, 1,000 tons in Lam Dong and Gia Lai each province).

Consecutive storms and floods have caused many deaths, missing and injuries; many houses and production and business establishments have had their roofs blown off and suffered heavy damage. People across the northern mountainous provinces and the central provinces are struggling to cope with floods and heavy losses in human lives and property due to floods and thunderstorms.
