My Tan flower village (Nam Dinh city) has hundreds of households growing all kinds of flowers located both in residential areas and on the banks of the Red River.
Taking advantage of the time to clean up the flower beds when the water had receded, Ms. Tran Thi Thao (Hong Ha 2 village, My Tan commune) sighed: "The entire area of 1.5 hectares of chrysanthemums, including both seedlings and large flowers for sale, of my family was damaged after this flood. On the night of September 9, heavy rain and rapidly rising floodwaters submerged the flower area that was being cut for sale, and there was no time to harvest and sell any of it."
Also in the scene of flowers being flooded for many days, Mr. Tran Van Ly (My Tan commune) is taking off his raincoat to cover the flowers so the water can drain and dry them to restore them.
Mr. Ly said that his family had 1.5 hectares of flowers and 1 hectare was flooded beyond repair, causing damage of about 400 million VND. The investment cost for each chrysanthemum crop is not small. Many households had to borrow money to invest in this crop, but before they could harvest, everything was submerged in water, directly affecting the family economy.
Mr. Ly added that most flower-growing households in the Hong Ha area suffered similar damage, not counting property in their homes that was damaged due to being submerged in water for many days.
"After this flood, to be able to cultivate again, people will have to wait for the water to recede, then plow the soil, let it dry before they can plant. If the weather is favorable, it will take more than 10 days for the soil to dry, then we can plant again. However, restoring the flower garden is not easy because the entire planting area has been damaged, we do not know where to get the capital to buy seeds," said Mr. Ly.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Le - Chairman of the People's Committee of My Tan Commune (Nam Dinh City) said that the commune has two flower growing areas, Hong Ha and Hong Long. Because it is bordered by the Red River on three sides, when the water rises, almost all the villages here are affected, some houses are flooded nearly 2m deep, and the outer areas are flooded up to 2.5m.
Currently, in My Tan commune, there are over 250 hectares of flower fields, located both in residential areas and on the banks of the Red River. The Hong Ha area specializes in flower cultivation, mainly chrysanthemums. Up to now, the flower cultivation area here has been damaged, submerged in water about 150 hectares.
"Not only were the flower growing areas damaged, but the houses and daily lives of people in these two areas were also severely affected," said the Chairman of the People's Committee of My Tan commune.
