Regarding the reflection of Lao Dong Newspaper on the situation of concentrated landfills bordering Ai Tu and Trieu Phong communes (Quang Tri province) being overloaded, causing environmental pollution and affecting people's lives, Quang Tri province has requested relevant units to urgently implement handling solutions.
The Provincial People's Committee requests the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Department of Finance, the Center for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation, and relevant units to urgently implement assigned tasks on handling overload at landfills and strengthening the management of domestic solid waste.
For Trieu Phong landfill, it is necessary to build landfill cell No. 3; close landfill cell No. 2; upgrade, expand and repair the leachate treatment system with a total cost of about 11.25 billion VND. Currently, the Department of Finance has established a field inspection team, unified a plan to propose the Provincial People's Committee to allocate capital to implement immediately in 2026.
From June 1, 2026, the Center for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation has received the collection, transportation and treatment of waste here. This unit needs to implement solutions to regulate vehicles, machinery, equipment and human resources to overcome overload, ensure fire safety and maintain operations.
The goal of the above solutions is to soon thoroughly overcome the overload situation, not to let environmental pollution occur causing public outrage.
Previously, in July 2026, Lao Dong Newspaper reflected that the concentrated landfill located on the border of Ai Tu and Trieu Phong communes for many years has been a place to receive domestic waste from many localities in the old Trieu Phong district. While the amount of waste is increasing, the treatment infrastructure is not invested commensurately, causing the landfill area to become overloaded.
Records at the scene show that after the rains, the smell of sewage rises strongly, spreading to the surrounding area. Many piles of domestic waste are piled up on the ground, not covered with soil according to the correct procedures. Plastic bags and light waste are scattered by the wind, densely stuck in the melaleuca forests surrounding the landfill.
Worryingly, only about 1km from the landfill is Nai Hiep village, Ai Tu commune with 135 households, 646 people. People said that on hot sunny days or after rain, the stench often spreads to residential areas, accompanied by dense flies appearing, affecting daily life.
Previously, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province also had a document requesting the Department of Finance to allocate funds to overcome the overload situation and close the landfills. In the priority list, Trieu Phong landfill is ranked in priority group No. 1 along with Gio Linh landfill and Quang Tri ward landfill because they are both overloaded and do not have a replacement waste receiving location.
