According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, last night (June 22), Typhoon MEKKHALA strengthened to level 16 (super typhoon level). The position at 4:00 AM on June 23 of Super Typhoon Mekkhala was at about 18.8 degrees North latitude - 125.2 degrees East longitude. Typhoon intensity is level 16, gusts above level 17. Currently, the super typhoon is in the East of Luzon Island (Philippines). The typhoon is starting to change direction to move north, moving along the sea area east of the Philippines to head towards Okinawa Island and southern Japan.
According to statistics, Super Typhoon Francisco (Mekkhala) is the strongest June storm in 22 years in the Northwest Pacific region.
Forecast for the next 12 to 24 hours, super typhoon Mekkhala will move slowly in a North-Northwest direction at a speed of about 5km/h and show signs of changing direction to the North, towards the southern sea area of Japan. Typhoon intensity will still be maintained at level 16 (super typhoon level), gusting above level 17.
After that, the storm changed direction to move north, followed by a northeast direction towards the sea area in Tosa Bay of Japan and gradually weakened. The Vietnam Meteorological Agency is still monitoring the developments of this Mekkhala storm.
The meteorological agency added that, in addition to super typhoon Mekkhala, a new tropical depression has just formed in the Northwest Pacific region. The location at 4 am this morning (June 23) is about 14.9 degrees North latitude - 146.2 degrees East longitude. This tropical depression is also likely to strengthen into a storm in the next 24 hours, moving parallel to super typhoon Mekkhala and also not moving into the East Sea.
