According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, this morning (June 22), Typhoon Mekhala continued to strengthen. The position at 7 am this morning of Typhoon Mekhala was at about 17.5 degrees north latitude - 127.9 degrees east longitude. The intensity at 7 am this morning of the typhoon was strong at level 14, gusting above level 17. Currently, the typhoon is about 550km east of the eastern part of Luzon Island (Philippines).
Forecast for the next 12-24 hours, storm Mekhala will move in a West-Northwest direction at a speed of about 15km/h. The intensity may strengthen to level 16 (super typhoon level), gusting above level 17.
The Vietnam Meteorological Agency is still monitoring the developments of this storm Mekhala.
Regarding the 2026 storm season, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, assessed that due to the impact of El Nino, the forecast number of storms in the East Sea is likely to appear less than the multi-year average. The number of tropical cyclones is about 8-10, of which 3-5 affect the mainland, concentrated in July - September in the North and October - November in the Central region. The meteorological agency emphasized that it does not rule out the possibility of storms affecting the entire Southern region in the last months of the year.
