On the afternoon of July 3, information from the Management Board of Cua Tung beach (Cua Tung commune, Quang Tri province) said that a rescue worker here bravely overcame large waves and promptly rescued a tourist who drowned.
Previously, at about 3 pm on the same day, a group of about 7 to 8 people went swimming at Cua Tung beach.
Because large waves appeared on the beach at this time, one person in the group was suddenly swept away by the fast-flowing water about 40 meters from the shore. The victim was later identified as a 49-year-old man, from Ben Hai commune (Quang Tri province).
Discovering the incident, Mr. Hoang Van Duc (born in 1967, residing in Hoa Ly Hai village, Cua Tung commune), a rescue worker on duty at Cua Tung beach, immediately deployed a rescue plan.
Regardless of the danger, Mr. Duc quickly put on a life jacket, dropped more lifebuoys along the water flow and rushed straight towards the victim who was wriggling amidst the fierce waves. When Mr. Duc approached the position, the 49-year-old man was almost unconscious and was gradually sinking underwater.
With experience and calmness, Mr. Duc quickly pulled the victim away, skillfully tying him tightly to the lifebuoy. After about 10 minutes of being supported to float on the water and given temporary first aid, the victim gradually woke up. Mr. Duc continued to guide the man to swim against the current to get ashore.
Due to the huge sea waves, it took more than 30 minutes of struggling with the rough seas for Mr. Duc to bring the victim to the safe shore.
According to Mr. Duc, the victim was a swimmer, but in the face of unexpectedly large waves and fast-flowing water, he was helpless, leading to exhaustion and drowning.
Currently, the weather in sea areas with large waves, swimming in the sea poses many dangerous risks. Functional agencies recommend that people and tourists when participating in swimming in the sea should pay special attention to observation, strictly comply with the warnings of rescue forces to ensure safety of life.
