Although life is full of worries, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dan (Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city), also known as "Mr. Ba Dan", with disabled legs, still silently does unpaid work every day patching roads for charity, helping traffic participants to be safe.
Mr. Ba Dan shared that before that, he worked as a lottery ticket seller, and every day on the road he witnessed countless traffic accidents, even deaths due to potholes. He was determined to volunteer to patch these damaged roads to limit unfortunate accidents for the people.
“I will continue to do this volunteer work and try to do as much as possible every day to help society. When I no longer have the strength, I will pass it on to my children and grandchildren,” Mr. Ba Dan added.
Similarly, with the desire to see everyone's vehicles travel safely, Mr. Nguyen Van Ly and Mrs. Mai Xuan Duong (Thot Not District, Can Tho City) traveled together in a truck carrying a nail suction bucket, traveling dozens of kilometers every day to help people on the road suck up nails.
Mr. Ly said that from 2019 until now, he quit his job as a motorbike taxi driver and started making nail suction vehicles to help road users. In addition to sucking nails on the roads in Can Tho City, he and his wife also go to neighboring provinces such as An Giang, Hau Giang, and Soc Trang to continue sucking nails. To have funds to maintain operations, he receives about 60 lottery tickets to sell every day.
“Every trip, if it’s a little, my wife and I suck up nearly 1kg of metal, sometimes more than 3kg. Thinking about how many tires those nails, screws, and sharp metal objects will destroy makes me feel that my work is even more meaningful,” said Mr. Ly.
Mrs. Mai Xuan Duong (Mr. Ly's wife) excitedly said: "Seeing my husband suffering while collecting nails, I also followed him and endured the hardship, running from one province to another to have a wife and husband and be happy. Even though I am really poor, I am happy to have such a good heart."
Also doing charity work for more than 10 years, physician Nguyen Van Chien (61 years old) and kind-hearted people have supported free medical examination and treatment for the poor, at the Long Thanh pagoda campus (O Mon district, Can Tho city).
At the beginning, the clinic faced many difficulties due to lack of facilities and human resources. However, the good reputation spread far and wide, and people from all over joined hands to support. Up to now, the clinic has a team of more than 600 people collecting medicinal herbs, 20 people participating in supporting the dispensing of medicine, most of whom are local people, teachers and students.
“Every day, I examine hundreds of poor patients for free, realizing that they have suffered too many hardships and illnesses. Treating people to cure their illnesses is also a joy for myself and the volunteers who support the clinic,” said the physician.
After about 10 years of operation, the clinic receives and provides free medicine to 300-400 patients every day, not only for people in Can Tho but also for many other provinces and cities. In addition, patients who come from far away are also supported with free vegetarian meals during their treatment.
