Notes when bathing young children from 12-24 months old

Ngọc Anh |

Bathing is a time to help young children relax, play and clean their bodies. However, for children from 12-24 months old, parents still need to pay special attention to safety issues.

Do not leave young children alone in the bathtub

This is the most important principle. Absolutely do not leave young children alone, without someone to watch over them, even for a short time. Children can drown even when the water level is not deep. Therefore, before starting to bathe, parents should prepare towels, soap, shampoo and necessary items.

If the doorbell or phone rings and you need to leave the bathroom, carry the child out of the bathtub, wrap a towel and take the child with you.

Do not put children in the tub when the water is flowing

Bathing water should be prepared before putting the child in the tub. Leaving the child in the tub while the water is still flowing can cause the water level to rise too high or the water temperature to change suddenly.

Bath water should be at a moderately warm level, about 32-38 degrees C. Young children often prefer cool water over adults.

Control water intake and guide children to sit

Do not pour too much water into the tank. For newcomers and older children, the water level should not be too high to the waistline when the child is sitting.

Parents also need to train children to the habit of sitting instead of standing in the bathtub to limit the risk of slipping and falling. For children who already know how to sit, a suction buoy can support, but this device cannot replace adult supervision.

Proactively prevent collisions and slipping

Bathtubs are usually very slippery, so rubber mats can be used to help children sit more firmly. Compressed shower caps can also limit the risk of children hitting their heads against the faucet.

If the bathroom uses sliding glass doors, make sure the doors are made of safe glass.

Use soap, shampoo in moderation

Soaps, shampoos and foamy shower gels can dry out the skin or cause rash in children if used too much. These products can also irritate the urethra.

A simple way is to let children play at the beginning of the bath session, then use soap and shampoo at the end of the bath session, avoid letting children sit for too long in soapy water.

Prevent burns and avoid letting children touch water taps

Water that is too hot can cause serious burns to children in a very short time. Parents should also not let children play or touch the thrower handle. When children grow older, they may be able to rotate the thrower themselves, leading to the risk of injury or burns.

Keep electrical equipment away from the bath area

Electrical appliances such as hair dryers and hair rollers should be placed away from bathtubs and areas with water. This is a simple but necessary measure to limit the risk of unsafety for children.
