Knowing enough

Have you ever wondered, why do we often fall into a situation where the more we work, the more we feel lacking? Lao Tzu was originally a master of minimalist lifestyle from thousands of years ago, when the world did not have iPhones or e-commerce platforms to "close petitions" overnight. He said: "The biggest disaster is not knowing enough." It sounds as simple as eating water spinach rice, but in fact, this is a heartfelt advice sent to the bottomless greed of humans.

We live in a strange loop. Having a motorbike dreams of a car, having an apartment dreams of a garden villa with a fish pond to admire for... peace of mind (even though taking care of fish is exhausting). The "not knowing enough" is like him drinking salt water to quench his thirst. The more he drinks, the more thirsty he becomes, the more thirsty he drinks.

Lao Tzu did not tell us to become monks or throw away all our possessions. He only gently warned that: When your heart has no stopping point, then you are the poorest person in the world, no matter how many zeros there are in your account. Because the richest person is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least.

Lao Tzu's word "enough" is good in that it has extremely high personalization. For someone who is hungry, a bowl of instant noodles plus an egg is enough to satisfy their stomach. For someone in love, a handshake in the middle of the street is enough to see that they are the master of the world. But for those who do not know enough, even if they have the whole world in their hands, they still feel a lack of... something, often a lack of peace. Knowing enough is not laziness, not stopping and "living on your back waiting for morning glory". Knowing enough is knowing when to drop your racket to go to bed, knowing when to stop drinking to go home to your wife and children, and knowing that the old phone still works well, there is no need to throw it away to buy the latest one.

So where does real freedom lie?

Lao Tzu's philosophy is actually a problem of liberating labor for the soul. When he knows what is enough, he suddenly becomes... "invincible". No one can use money or fame to threaten someone who is not interested in those things anymore.

Those who know enough are rich". Lao Tzu concluded with such a green sentence. Living in life, the biggest disaster is not poverty, but having everything but still feeling poor. So, occasionally, try looking in the mirror, smiling and telling yourself: "This is already very delicious, more than ten thousand people are bored, no need to add anything else", or looking at a simple meal that feels as delicious as eating seafood. That is when you are enjoying this earthly blessing.
