Increase income to retain good doctors for public hospitals

Lê Thanh Phong |

Many public health facilities in localities are in a situation where medical staff are transferred to work in the private sector. Many good doctors are dedicated to their profession, but it is difficult to stay in the hospital because their income is not enough to cover their living expenses.

The salary of public sector health workers is too low, which everyone knows. Therefore, a private hospital "hunting for people" with an income 5-7 times that of a public hospital is too much of an advantage. Being good at studying to become a good doctor cannot leave a family in need, but must be living well and living well, so choosing a high-income workplace is natural.

Agree that good doctors working in private hospitals also serve the community, but this shift creates human resources gaps in public hospitals, affecting the quality of medical examination and treatment. In fact, not everyone has the conditions to go to private hospitals for treatment, public hospitals are still the support for the majority of patients today.

Many public hospitals and good doctors have left, the hospital has lost its reputation, the number of patients has gradually decreased, to the point that there is no source of revenue to pay salaries for medical staff. Without salary, medical staff leave, the hospital has fewer patients, that is a vicious cycle that is difficult to escape.

Increasing income is a solution to retain medical staff in the public sector, but the problem is not only retaining good people, but also improving the quality of medical examination and treatment in public health facilities to serve patients and take better care of people's health.

Currently, the salary of a doctor who has worked for many years is only about 8 million VND/month, so how can it be enough to cover personal expenses, not to mention family, wife and children. Therefore, increase income based on living standards and salary of other professions to come up with a suitable salary level.

In addition to salary increases, it is necessary to increase the allowance for medical staff commensurate with their labor capacity. A doctor is a professional, highly skilled worker, a 24-hour shift only receives 115,000 VND, which is unreasonable, there must be changes to ensure fairness for medical workers.

The ancestors said "only one can be accepted in medicine", "the profession" here is not superficial, but is the responsibility to patients, the professional quality of doctors. When being paid to have a good life, the responsibility of the doctor will certainly be increased.
