According to Lorena Drago, a registered dietitian specializing in diabetes and multicultural nutrition, some herbal teas can interact with one or more medications, affecting blood sugar levels, causing hypoglycemia and leading to other health problems.
Here are 3 herbal teas you should not drink if you have diabetes.
1. Aloe herbal tea
Excessive use of aloe vera can have a negative impact on blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycemia. Because they can cause blood sugar levels to be too low, which is dangerous for people taking hypoglycemic drugs.
2. Chamomile herbal tea
Chamomile herbal tea is used to aid sleep, digestion, mental health, and more. However, if you have diabetes and are also taking certain medications, such as the blood thinner warfarin, chamomile can interact dangerously with your medication due to an increased risk of bleeding.
3. Fenugreek herbal tea
Fenugreek has hypoglycemic effects, causing a drop in blood sugar levels. It can also interact with blood-thinning medications, which can be harmful to people with diabetes and heart disease. So, before using fenugreek as an herbal tea, talk to your doctor to make sure it won’t interact with any medications you’re taking.
