On June 26, Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital (Quang Tri) said that the unit had just received and treated patient D. S (born in 2014, residing in Thuong Trach commune, Quang Tri province) who was admitted to the hospital in a state of difficulty urinating, prolonged intermittent urination.
According to MSc.BS Doan Quoc Huy - Deputy Head of the Department of Nephrology - Urology, during the examination, doctors discovered a large lump of stones in the patient's bladder and indicated surgery to remove the stones.
During the surgery, the team removed a gravel about 6 x 4 cm in size, weighing nearly 200 grams. The gravel occupies the entire incision, making it difficult to remove. The gravel surface is rough due to mineral salt deposits for a long time.
Dr. Huy said that when hollow, the bladder is only about 5 cm long; when full of urine, it can expand to an average capacity of 400 - 600 ml and a length of about 15 cm. With this size, the patient's stones almost occupy the entire space in the bladder.
Doctors recommend that bladder stones can be detected early through ultrasound or CT scans. Treatment from an early stage helps reduce uncomfortable symptoms and limit the risk of open surgery. When abnormal signs of urinary tract appear, patients need to go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment.
