On June 22, Hue Central Hospital said that patient P.M.D. (41 years old, residing in Hue City) - the last person in 6 cases to receive tissue and organs from the same brain-dead donor - has recovered stably after a heart transplant and was discharged from the hospital. This is the 23rd heart transplant performed at the hospital.
Before the transplant, the patient was diagnosed with end-stage heart failure, the rate of left ventricular discharge was only 25%, and circulation support with ECMO and aortic convection balloons was required. After surgery, the patient's health improved significantly, no longer having difficulty breathing, the rate of left ventricular discharge reached 65%, and biochemical and hematological indicators were within treatment limits.
Previously, the Organ Transplant Center of Hue Central Hospital received the organ donation wish of the family of patient M.D.T who suffered severe traumatic brain injury due to an accident. After being confirmed brain dead by the professional council, the organ source was coordinated to be transplanted to suitable patients on the waiting list.
According to Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital, the medical team has raced against time to bring life opportunities to patients waiting for organ transplants.
To date, all 6 patients receiving heart, liver, kidney and cornea from brain-dead donors have recovered positively and been discharged from the hospital. Among them, liver transplant patients have recovered well, liver function is normal; two kidney transplant patients have significantly improved kidney function; two cornea transplant patients have partially restored vision after many years of visual impairment.
The success of transplants continues to affirm the professional capacity and multi-specialized coordination capacity of Hue Central Hospital in the field of organ transplantation, while spreading the humanistic meaning of organ donation to save people.
