On July 14, information from Phan Chau Trinh University Medical Hospital (Da Nang City), this unit has just received 8 cases of bees stinging at the same time after participating in an outdoor picnic.
Among the 8 cases, 3 patients were indicated for hospitalization for inpatient treatment due to having multiple bite wounds on their bodies, initial symptoms were relatively severe and the risk of complications needed to be closely monitored. The remaining 5 cases, after being treated with wounds and stable conditions, were prescribed medication, instructed to monitor at home and scheduled for re-examination the next day.
According to BSCKI Huynh Quang Sang, Head of the Emergency - Resuscitation Department, Phan Chau Trinh University Medical Hospital, robins are a species with strong venom. The level of harm to human health depends on the number of stings, the location of the sting, the amount of venom released into the body and the constitution of each victim.
Dr. Sang said that robin bites not only cause swelling and pain in the spot but also pose a risk of anaphylaxis, rhabdomyolysis, liver and kidney damage, and many other dangerous complications that threaten life. People should not be subjective, especially when having multiple bites or symptoms such as shortness of breath, urticaria, dizziness, chest pain, little urination or dark urine appear. Coming to a medical facility early helps doctors assess risks, monitor and intervene promptly, thereby minimizing severe complications for patients.
To limit the risk of bee attacks, doctors recommend that people pay attention not to approach or poke into beehives, and at the same time limit going into bushes when participating in outdoor activities. For units organizing picnics or collective activities, it is necessary to carefully survey the terrain before the event to ensure safety for participants. In case of detecting bees flying around, everyone should remain calm and slowly move away, avoiding actions that incite the bee colony.
When unfortunately bitten by a bee, the first step is to quickly leave the area with bees and perform first aid by washing the bitten area with water and soap, combined with cold compresses to reduce swelling and pain. People should absolutely not arbitrarily apply leaves or apply folk remedies from word of mouth to the wound because this can easily lead to the risk of infection. For cases of multiple stings, being bitten in sensitive areas such as the head, face, neck, or appearing systemic symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, quickly taking the victim to the nearest medical facility is a decisive factor to protect health and life.
