Entering the summer, the National Children's Hospital has received many cases of children with accidents of different severity. Dr. Dang Anh Duong - Head of the Department of Intensive Care of Surgery said: "In just the past two weeks, the hospital has continuously received cases of children with multiple injuries who had to be hospitalized, many of whom were in critical condition. It is worth mentioning that most of them are students, having accidents while participating in traffic, climbing or getting heavy objects on them.
One of the more serious cases was a 9-year-old child colliding with a car while sitting behind a motorbike, causing the entire right leg to break, violate the pelvis and suffer soft tissue injuries.
MSc. Dr. Nguyen Trong Dung - Deputy Head of the Emergency and Poison Control Department said that the child was hospitalized with multiple injuries, respiratory failure, and circulatory failure. The emergency team had to activate the "Red alarm", mobilize many specialties to coordinate resuscitation, emergency blood transfusion and life-saving surgery. Although she was past critical condition, the child had to have her right ankle amputated due to severe damage.
Another case was a 15-year-old child climbing a fabric picking tree and fell, causing a tear in the genitals, damage to the rectum and urethra, and requiring emergency surgery. A 7-year-old boy was hit by an iron gate, leading to a broken skull, cerebral hemorrhage, deep coma, and a very reserved prognosis. Many other rare situations also occurred, such as a 9-year-old child being stabbed in the shoulder by a fish arrow causing afuluga in the lungs, a 19-month-old child being bitten by a monkey in the face and hands, or a child falling from a height causing a severe traumatic brain injury.
In addition to particularly serious accidents, many children fall from their exercise vehicles, fall stairs or fall from stilt houses to the yard, causing broken limbs and traumatic brain injuries. After intensive treatment, most of them have overcome the risk, but the consequences are unpredictable.
Dr. Dang Anh Duong said that the main reason is that children have long school days off, participate in many outdoor activities but lack close supervision. The fact that they are active and curious combined with lack of self-defense knowledge makes children susceptible to accidents: falling, burning, drowning, traffic accidents, dangerous climbing, strangling foreign objects, drinking chemicals incorrectly...
To limit accidents and injuries, it is necessary to strengthen supervision of children in all activities, especially when playing outdoors, swimming, or participating in traffic; Equip children with danger prevention skills, teach them not to climb, not to play with sharp objects or chemicals; Ensure a safe living space: windows, balconies with sturdy fences, stairs with sturdy sleeves; Do not let children control their own vehicles when they are not old enough. Cycling needs to comply with the law, not cross the road suddenly; Coordinate with schools and communities to educate life skills, integrate knowledge of accident prevention into summer activities; In places where construction works are located, it is necessary to place warning signs and carefully cover.
"When a child unfortunately has an accident, parents should absolutely not handle it at home but have to take the child to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment. Injuries are not a far-fetched thing, and summer should not become a sad memory for any family. Proactively preventing and protecting children is the responsibility of all of us," said Dr. Dang Anh Duong.
