Don't mistake low blood pressure for high blood pressure

Many people believe that low blood pressure is safer than high blood pressure. However, both conditions can cause dangerous complications.

According to Dr. Bui Thi Thuy - Department of Adult Nutrition Examination and Counseling, Institute of Nutrition, many people think that low blood pressure is better than high blood pressure. However, this is not a correct concept. Both high blood pressure and low blood pressure can cause dangerous complications if not detected and controlled promptly.

Hypertension is defined when blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or higher. This is the leading risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and kidney failure.

What is worrying is that many people get sick but have no obvious symptoms. When detected, the disease often progresses and damages organs. Today, high blood pressure is not only seen in the elderly but also appears more and more in young people due to a high-salt diet, processed foods, lack of exercise and frequent stress.

Low blood pressure is when the index is below 90/60 mmHg. Patients may experience symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, fatigue, reduced concentration, even fainting, increasing the risk of falls or accidents while driving or working at height.

Therefore, low blood pressure does not mean health. If the condition lasts or abnormal symptoms appear, patients need to be examined to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

To control blood pressure, experts recommend: Eat a balanced diet, increase green vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish; limit foods high in salt, sugar, saturated fat, processed foods, alcohol and tobacco.

People with low blood pressure need to eat enough meals, drink enough water, do not skip breakfast and can supplement with salt according to the doctor's instructions.

Maintain exercise for at least 30 minutes/day, 5 days/week in forms such as walking, cycling, swimming or yoga.

Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night, limit staying up late and stay relaxed.

Measure your blood pressure periodically at home or have a health check-up as directed by your doctor to detect abnormalities early.

You should go to a medical facility if you frequently experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, dizziness, fainting or abnormalities when your blood pressure is measured many times. Elderly people and people with cardiovascular disease and diabetes need to have regular health check-ups to prevent complications.
