On March 11, leaders of 22-12 Hospital (Khanh Hoa) said that the gastrointestinal endoscopy department of the hospital had just successfully performed an endoscopy to remove a foreign object, which was a denture.
According to information from the hospital, before that, while taking medicine, patient N.T. T. (61 years old, residing in Dien Tho commune) accidentally swallowed the disassembled dentures.
Immediately after that, the patient developed a feeling of choking in the throat, discomfort when swallowing, so he went to Hospital 22-12 for examination.
Through clinical examination, X-ray and endoscopy, doctors discovered that the foreign object was a denture about 2.5 x 4cm in size, stuck in the patient's esophagus.
Faced with the risk of causing damage to the esophageal mucosa, the medical team quickly performed procedures to remove the foreign object. After intervention, the dentures were safely removed, helping the patient avoid dangerous complications.
Doctors said that the situation of swallowing dentures when eating or taking medicine is not uncommon, especially in elderly people using retractable dentures.
Foreign objects such as dentures are often large in size, sharp edges, easily stuck in the esophagus, and can cause scratches, bleeding, and even esophageal perforation if not treated promptly.
Therefore, doctors recommend that people using dentures should check their teeth before eating or taking medicine. When signs such as choking, pain when swallowing or suspicion of swallowing foreign objects appear, patients need to go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment, absolutely do not self-treat at home.
