Creating pressure when starting work, young people are at risk of mental disorders

Hạnh Thơm |

Work pressure, self-expectations and difficulty adapting make many young people sleepless, anxious, withdrawn, affecting mental health.

Newly entering the labor market, many young people face work pressure, personal expectations and difficulties in adapting to the new environment. If not recognized and supported in time, these pressures can affect sleep, emotions, behavior and mental health.

At just 23 years old, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (character name has been changed), in Hanoi, just entered the labor market and had to face work pressure. For many consecutive days of insomnia and stress due to work, she gradually became withdrawn, did not want to share with relatives and had times when it was difficult to control her emotions.

When I first started working, I was stressed by work, didn't sleep well, even dreamed about work, dreamed that I was still at the office. Every day I go to work in a state of anxiety and fatigue. I don't want to go to work when I wake up in the morning, and I am often worried during working hours. I also gain weight uncontrollably and gradually distance myself from everyone," Ms. Lan shared.

According to MSc.BS Nguyen Khac Dung, Deputy Head of the Clinical Department, Mai Huong Day Mental Hospital, recently, patients coming for examination due to psychological and mental problems have tended to increase, among which the younger group is noteworthy.

In particular, newcomers to the working environment often face many changes at the same time, from work pressure, personal expectations to adapting requirements to the office environment. Many young people set too high requirements for themselves but rarely share or do not proactively seek support when encountering difficulties.

Dr. Dung cited the case of a young person who recently came for examination with symptoms of prolonged insomnia, stress and pressure at work. Through exchange, the doctor found that most of this person's pressure stemmed from creating pressure on themselves, and also encountering difficulties in communication at work.

When assigned tasks, superiors only say'You do this job'. When encountering difficulties, he doesn't know how to talk to his boss. Every time he has to talk about work, he feels scared and hesitant," shared Dr. Dung.

According to doctors, seemingly simple comments in the office environment, such as "This is easy" or "If you can't do it, let AI do it", can sometimes make young people who are inherently insecure feel more pressured if they don't know how to receive and exchange appropriately.

From actual examinations, doctors recommend that young people pay attention to prolonged changes in sleep, emotions, behavior and daily activities. Do not underestimate abnormal expressions or try to endure alone.

Proactively sharing with relatives, colleagues or seeking support from a psychologist can help young people relieve pressure early. In case symptoms persist or clearly affect life and work, patients should go to a specialized facility for evaluation and appropriate intervention.
