The reigning women's singles champion, Coco Gauff, was eliminated in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open in the early morning of September 2 (Vietnam time). The third seed lost to fellow American, Emma Navarro.
Navarro, the 13th seed, took advantage of Gauff's 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Paula Badosa of Spain.
Gauff's defeat means Serena Williams remains the last woman to successfully defend her US Open title, having won in 2014.
Navarro, 23, beat Gauff at Wimbledon in July and showed his superiority from the start in the fourth round match.
The New Yorker broke serve to lead 4-2 in the first set and sealed the set in the ninth game, with a 27-hit rally.
In the first set, Gauff's terrible day was shown by 21 unforced errors, compared to Navarro's 8.
Navarro took a 4-3 lead in the second set with another break after Gauff made her eighth double fault of the match.
However, Gauff, who dropped the first set in her third-round win over Elina Svitolina, fought back to win the next three games and level the score at 1-1 after two sets.
However, that was only a short-lived effective period for the 20-year-old player, as he once again made three double faults in the deciding third set and lost 3-6.
The champion was dethroned, while Navarro reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final on home soil.
Meanwhile, in the men's singles of the 2024 US Open , the quarter-finalists have been determined, including Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev, and Grigor Dimitrov.
