According to Xinhua News Agency, the Niger Ministry of Road and Air Transport said that the death toll in a traffic accident that occurred last Friday in western Niger has increased to 22 people.
The incident occurred when 2 passenger buses collided on the Maradi - Madaoua route, about 55km from Madaoua city.
Among the deceased were 17 soldiers. The accident also injured 37 others.
Immediately after the incident occurred, Niger authorities launched an investigation to clarify the cause of the collision.
The accident occurred right at a time when the Niger government was stepping up propaganda campaigns to raise awareness about road traffic safety, in the context that accidents are still occurring with a worrying frequency in this country.
Traffic accidents occur frequently in Niger, mainly due to speeding, driving after drinking alcohol, along with the degraded condition of vehicles and roads.
In 2025, Niger recorded more than 7,100 traffic accidents, killing more than 1,200 people and seriously injuring more than 4,400 people.
