India and Pakistan agreed a ceasefire on May 10 after pressure from the US and four days of fighting. However, just hours after reaching a ceasefire agreement, large explosions occurred in border cities and towns. India accused Pakistan of violating a ceasefire agreement while Pakistan denied it.
According to authorities, people and Reuters witnesses, artillery and drone fire has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir - the focus of much of the fighting in recent days. The explosions from air defense systems rang in cities amid power outages, similar to previous days.
Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misri told reporters that Pakistan had violated the agreement reached by the two countries earlier in the day and that the Indian armed forces had been instructed to " handle strongly" any recurrent actions.
"We call on Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and handle the situation seriously and responsibly," said the Indian Foreign Minister.
For its part, the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan said it had pledged a ceasefire and accused India of violating the ceasefire agreement. Our forces are handling the situation responsibly and controllingly, the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan also called on soldiers on the ground to restrain themselves and stressed that all issues in the implementation of the ceasefire should be resolved through exchanges at appropriate levels.
This is the worst fighting between the two neighbors in nearly three decades and is at risk of breaking out into a full-scale war in one of the world's most unstable and densely populated areas. The fierce fighting caused the total number of civilian deaths to increase to 66.
Previously, on May 10, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced to X: "Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire, effective immediately".
Indian Foreign Minister Misri previously said that the military commanders of the two countries had discussed and agreed that all fighting would stop at 5:00 p.m. on May 10, Indian time.
US President Donald Trump also posted on social media announcing: "After a long night of negotiations mediated by the US, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire."
India and Pakistan have been embroiled in a dispute over Kashmir since the two became independent in 1947. India, with a majority of Hindu and Pakistanese Islam, both manage part of Kashmir but declare sovereignty over the entire region.
