The National Meteorological Center of China (NMC) on July 3 continued to maintain a yellow warning for Typhoon Maysak as the storm is forecast to cause strong winds and heavy rain in the southern region of the country.
The latest storm news at noon on July 3rd from Xinhua News Agency said that the center of Typhoon Maysak - China's 10th storm in 2026 - is about 145km south of Lingshui district, Hainan province.
It is forecasted that the latest storm in the East Sea will move in a northwest direction at a speed of 10-15 km/h and continue to strengthen before making landfall in the coastal area from Lingshui to Leidong, Hainan province.
The Hainan Provincial Meteorological Administration said that Typhoon Maysak is expected to make landfall in Hainan province in the afternoon of July 3. At that time, Maysak will become the first typhoon to make landfall in China in 2026.
After passing through Hainan Island, the storm will enter the Gulf of Tonkin and make landfall for the second time on the evening of July 4 in the coastal area bordering Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (China) and northern Vietnam before gradually weakening.
From 2:00 PM on July 3rd to 2:00 PM on July 4th, strong winds are forecast to affect most of the East Sea, the Quỳnh Châu Strait, the Gulf of Tonkin as well as the coastal areas of central and western Guangdong province, along with the coastal areas of Hainan and Guangxi.
Meanwhile, many places in central and western Guangdong, southern Guangxi and Hainan Island are forecast to have heavy to very heavy rain.
Faced with the storm's developments, the Hainan provincial government has comprehensively suspended traffic on the island. All inland railway routes stopped operating on July 3rd and 4th.
China currently applies a 4-level weather warning system according to color codes, in order from high to low: red, orange, yellow and blue.
