On August 31, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian officials had arrested a suspect in the shooting death of former National Assembly Chairman and prominent pro-Western politician Andrey Parubiy.
President Zelensky wrote on social network X that a suspect had been arrested after shooting Mr. Parubiy in the city of Lviv on August 30. No details about the suspect or the motive for the murder were released, except that the suspect had given " Initial statements".
"The necessary investigation activities are underway. I have directed the disclosure of available information to the public," President Zelensky wrote.
Home Secretary Igor Klymenko said on Telegram that dozens of police and security personnel have been involved in the arrest of the suspect in the Khmelnytsky region of western Ukraine. He affirmed: "This crime has been carefully prepared: the travel schedule of the victim is being monitored, the route is calculated and the escape plan is also arranged in advance".
Parubiy, 54, a lawmaker from the Lviv region, who participated in the Ukrainian Orange Revolution in 2004 and led volunteer units during the 2014 Maidan protests, the protests forced the resignation of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. He was Chairman of the National Assembly from 2016 to 2019.
Local media reported that Mr. Parubiy had been shot 8 times by a shooter pretending to be the delivery man and died before the doctor could be present.
The attackers were said to be wearing shipper clothes, helmets and carrying a delivery bag.
The witness said that he approached and fired 8 consecutive shots, then put the gun in his bag, calmly leaving the scene on an electric bicycle.
Mr Zelensky called it a "horrific murder" and said he would "make up all necessary forces and means" to investigate.
