A July 22-23 (local time) Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that US Vice President Kamala Harris received 44% support, while former President Donald Trump received 42%.
The poll was conducted immediately after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign and transferred to Ms. Kamala Harris.
On July 22, US Vice President Kamala Harris received the support of 2,538 delegates attending the Democratic Party's National Convention, far exceeding the required number of 1,976 delegates to receive the official nomination.
Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump were tied at 44% in the July 15-16 poll. Previously, Mr. Trump led by 1% in the poll on July 1-2.
National polls often provide important signals about American voters' support for presidential candidates. However, the electoral college of certain battleground states is what ultimately determines who wins the presidential election .
About 56% of registered voters agreed with the statement that Ms. Harris, 59, "is mentally sharp and can deal with challenges," compared with 49% who said the same about Mr. Trump, 78. Only 22% of voters gave the same assessment to President Joe Biden .
About 80% of Democratic voters said they had a favorable opinion of Mr. Biden, compared with 91% who said the same about Ms. Harris. Three-quarters of Democratic voters agree Ms. Harris should be nominated now, with only a quarter saying candidates should be allowed to compete for the party's nomination.
The poll, conducted online, surveyed 1,241 American adults nationwide, including 1,018 registered voters.
