The Orange County Attorney General's Office, California (USA) said Laura Lee Yourex, who lives in California, was prosecuted for 5 criminal crimes after reporting her petition to register her dog for voting. If convicted, Laura could face a maximum sentence of six years in prison, RT reported.
According to the indictment, in 2021, Laura Lee Yourex sent ballots via letter under the dog name Maya Jean Yourex in the election to remove the governor. This ballot is counted as valid. In 2022, this person continued to do the same thing in the primary election, but this time the vote was rejected.
The prosecutor said that Laura Lee Yourex once posted a photo of a Maya dog with a "I voted" sticker on social media in 2022. Two years later, she shared a picture of her dog's name card next to the ballot with the caption "Maya still gets the vote", even though the animal is dead.
California currently does not require residents to present their identification documents when registering or voting in statewide elections, except for the first federal vote. This has sparked controversy about the risk of election fraud by mail.
US President Donald Trump has long affirmed that mail-in voting could lead to fraud and has announced that it will ban this form before the 2026 midterm election. The California government is now among 19 states filing a lawsuit to block Trump's executive order from tightening regulations on identification documents and limiting the vote counting by mail.
