Thai police have arrested two men after discovering a homemade tim bomb in their car en route to Phuket - a famous tourist destination in the south of the country.
The incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on June 24 at a control station near the bypass intersection in front of the Phang Nga Provincial Town Hall. The blocked car was a black Honda City with the Surin license plate. The authorities conducted an inspection and discovered an explosive device cleverly disguised in the goods in the rear seats of the vehicle.
The device is described as a homemade bomb with a digital timing clock attached to a printed electronic circuit, placed in a transparent plastic bag along with a quantity of gunpowder. The bomb and mine clearance unit confirmed that this was a homemade explosive device.
The two men, aged 29 and 37, have been detained. They came from Pattani province, a southern region of Thailand that has experienced many conflicts. The identities of the two were not disclosed.
According to initial statements to the police, the two suspects said they were hired at around 7pm the night before to take turns driving from Thepha district, Songkhla province. The tenants provided them with a smartphone and a mobile Wi-fi player. The destination positioned on GPS is in Phuket province.
The bomb has now been safely removed by the authorities for further examination. Phang Nga City Police Chief, Colonel Weerapong Rakchito, said the investigation is still ongoing to clarify the motive and related subjects.
