According to Politico, Europe is tending to form a new group rather than discuss it on the basis of NATO to deal with the biggest crisis in decades as Mr Trump has continuously made tense moves with the EU, including criticizing Ukrainian President Zelensky, approaching Russia and demanding Kiev to return aid in resources.
This has led the West to question the foundation of the seemingly unshakable alliance.
On February 18, French President Emmanuel Macron held an online meeting with the leaders of 19 European countries, along with representatives of NATO and the EU to discuss how to deal with the new situation.
The list of participating countries mostly matches NATO and EU members. However, without the presence of Hungary and Slovakia, the two countries tend to be pro-Russian.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Macron emphasized the important role of Ukraine in peace negotiations and the need for security guarantees for Kiev. The French president affirmed that regional security in Europe cannot be lacking in negotiations between Russia and the US.
Previously, on February 17, Mr. Macron also chaired an emergency summit in Paris with European leaders to discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
There are currently no further details on the new group that Europe could form to respond to the crisis.
However, in addition to the recent Paris-chaired meetings, Europe has established many other small alliances, including Weimar (France, Germany, Poland) and the group of countries in the Nordic - Baltic region.
According to Politico, these small groups are considered a crisis response unit when faced with problems that require quick action. Although official decisions are not made from these groups, preparations will be made from here.
Typically, the 27 EU leaders will meet within the framework of the European Council to address common challenges. However, European Council President Antonio Costa has not yet held a meeting in this form because he is uncertain to make a specific result, the two unnamed EU diplomats revealed.
