According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was strong with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1.
The US Tsunami Warning Center warned that dangerous tsunamis could occur in sea areas within 300km from the epicenter, including the coasts of Bonaire, Venezuela, Curacao and Aruba. The agency also informed that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are facing tsunami risks.
The earthquake occurred 28km northwest of Montalbán. Some of Venezuela's largest oil refineries are located around the area.
The earthquake was felt in the capital Caracas, where people were seen evacuating from buildings, gathering on the streets.
Many viral videos show damaged buildings with collapsed walls and dust covering some neighborhoods in the city.
