This new vehicle, named Proteus, is designed to monitor submarines and perform dangerous missions in the context of increasing tensions in the North Atlantic.
According to the British Navy, Proteus has successfully completed a short test cycle. This helicopter was developed in a £60 million program, considered an important factor to protect Britain and NATO allies from changing threats in the region.
Proteus is designed and manufactured by the defense and aerospace corporation Leonardo. This system relies on sensors and software-operated computer systems, allowing helicopters to self-assess the surrounding environment and make decisions during operation. The British Navy said that Proteus is designed for anti-submarine missions, maritime patrols and monitoring of underwater vehicles.
Mr. Nigel Colman - CEO of Leonardo Helicopters in the UK - said that Proteus represents a breakthrough change in the way naval aviation deploys missions. According to him, this unmanned helicopter can undertake long, flexible and dangerous missions in harsh environments, minimizing risks for humans.
The security context in Europe has changed since Russia launched a large-scale military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, causing many governments to increase defense spending and adjust force plans. In the North Atlantic, monitoring the operation of ships and submarines is increasingly being focused on.
The British Navy has now operated a number of unmanned devices, including small surveillance helicopters. Proteus is considered larger and more sophisticated, reflecting the increasing trend of applying automated technology in military operations at sea.
