Hungary hopes that Ukraine will restart the transit of Russian gas to the country. Hungary will not accept Ukraine's delay in negotiations on this issue with the European Commission, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told M1 television channel.
Hungary received energy security guarantees from the European Commission, which specifically mentioned the negotiations between Brussels and Kiev on restarting Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
Russian gas transported via pipelines across Ukraine has been stopped since January 1, 2025 due to Kiev's refusal to extend the transit agreement.
"The European Commission will negotiate with Ukraine on gas supplies to Europe through the Ukrainian gas pipeline network," Minister Peter Szijjarto said.
Asked what Budapest would do if Kiev deliberately dragged out the negotiations on gas transit, the Hungarian diplomat stressed: "If we see that they are delaying the restart of gas transit, we will have more opportunities to express our feelings in the upcoming vote in the European Union, when Ukraine's accession to the EU or sanctions against specific individuals or aid to Ukraine will be discussed."
