During the trip to Muscat, the first meeting of the Hoarmuz Joint Committee was held. While considering current issues related to the strait, we exchanged views on future management" - Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi shared on X.
The announcement was made hours after a US official told AFP that technical talks with Iran would continue. "Both sides will temporarily stop fighting from now and ships can move freely" in and around the strait, the US official revealed.
Previously, on June 28, Iran warned that any efforts by ships to avoid its priority route through Hormuz would increase tensions in the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz includes the territorial waters of Oman and Iran, but according to common international law, the two countries cannot block the way or charge tolls.
Tehran's continued maintenance of control of the Strait of Hormuz has caused many escalations of tension, the most recent being in the early morning of June 28, when the US Central Command announced that it had attacked 10 Iranian military targets for "Iran's continuous aggression against commercial ships".
Iran retaliated with attacks on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. Both Kuwait and Bahrain opposed Iran's attacks.
