Iran reveals plan to collect fees from Western ships through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran said it is coordinating with Oman to build a fee mechanism for Western ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

On July 28, according to TASS news agency, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said that Iran and Oman are negotiating to decide on the fee applied to Western ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The discussion between Iran and Oman not only focused on the issue of toll collection but also included security mechanisms and regulations for maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran and Oman are conducting negotiations on this issue. As the Iranian government and the Foreign Ministry have repeatedly affirmed, the two countries are jointly making decisions related to security in the Strait of Hormuz as well as the management mechanism for ships passing through this maritime route," Mr. Jalali said.

According to the Iranian diplomat, the fee for services related to transit through the Strait of Hormuz is still being discussed by the two sides and will be decided in the near future.

Previously, Mr. Jalali also said that Iran would continue to apply a special circulation mechanism to Russian ships when passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The above information was released in the context that the Strait of Hormuz continues to be one of the hotspots in the Middle East region. Since the end of February, after the US and Israel launched a military campaign against Iran, Tehran has responded with military measures and imposed restrictions on ships linked to the US and Israel passing through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting transport activities on this sea route.

Hormuz is a strategic energy transportation route of the world, which transits about 25% of oil and 20% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in global trade. Any developments in this region could have a significant impact on the international energy market.

After the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on a ceasefire in June, fighting broke out again from the beginning of July. On July 24-25, Iran and Oman held talks in Tehran on maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz and agreed to continue technical consultations.

Currently, Iran and Oman have not announced the time to make a final decision on the fee level as well as the mechanism applied to Western ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
