Information released by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. "According to the agreements reached, 6 billion USD out of a total of 12 billion USD of Iranian money being frozen in Qatar will be released and returned home" - President Masoud Pezeshkian shared.
According to a statement from the press department of the Iranian Presidential Office, the necessary work to return the remainder of this amount is also being continued.
On June 20, Western media reported that the US and Qatar are working on a mechanism to allow Iran to use part of its frozen assets to purchase humanitarian goods. Accordingly, Tehran can initially access the 6 billion USD that is being frozen in Qatar.
Estimates of Iran's total assets abroad vary significantly. Tehran believes that this figure is at least 100 billion USD, while many experts believe that the actual figure is much lower.
This frozen asset has existed almost throughout the existence of the Islamic Republic of Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
However, most of Iran's frozen money is recent payments, related to Iran's oil exports to China, India, South Korea and Japan. These Iranian money are stuck after the US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on Iran in 2018.
