Reuters reported that a French judicial source said that the person shot and killed by police after committing a knife attack on Saturday night in central Paris was born in 1997 in the Chechnya region of Russia, but did not disclose the identity and nationality of the person. French police have detained the suspect's parents for questioning.
The Paris prosecutor cited witnesses as saying that the suspect shouted "Allah Akbar" (the Greatness of All praise) when he used a knife to attack passersby. The authorities are investigating the incident in the direction that this was a terrorist attack.
A painting that is believed to be a portrait of the perpetrator shows a man with a bare chest bearded and wearing black pants. According to the source, before the attack, the police had never archived information about this person.
The stabbing occurred in District 2 of Paris, near the Opera House, where many tourists gathered to have fun on a weekend night. Currently, two of the four injured are still in critical condition.
The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attack, but did not provide evidence that the suspect was a member of the organization.
After the attack, French President Emmanuel Macron posted on his personal Twitter page that "France must once again pay the price with blood" and affirmed "they will be determined not to condone the friends of freedom".
Previously, the self-proclaimed Islamic State organization IS claimed responsibility for the attack on its propaganda channel. IS called the attackers "warriors" and said the stabbing was in response to countries participating in the anti-terrorist campaign in Syria and Iraq.
A series of IS terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of more than 200 people in France over the past three years. The coordinated attack in Paris and the Paris-Saint-Denis suburbs in November 2015 killed more than 130 people and injured hundreds.
