Poland's Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar said that Poland cannot execute a European arrest warrant for a Ukrainian citizen suspected of sabotaging the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines because the suspect is not on Polish territory, European Pravda reported.
In late August 2024, the German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that a Ukrainian citizen suspected of sabotaging the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines fled Poland in a Ukrainian diplomatic car and had previously passed through Germany without any hindrance.
Der Spiegel said Berlin believed the Warsaw authorities had warned the fugitive.
"The German government is... angry with Poland," Der Spiegel wrote, noting that people involved in German security agencies said they "will not forget this."
A German court issued an arrest warrant for the Ukrainian suspect in the first week of June and immediately placed him on Germany's wanted list. On June 21, Germany sent a European arrest warrant to Poland, but the planned arrest in Poland never took place.
Polish Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar was asked on Radio Zet whether it was true that Poland refused to hand over a Ukrainian diver suspected of blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany.
Mr Bodnar replied that "the location of this person on Polish territory has not yet been determined".
"German authorities have taken measures, but they cannot be implemented because the man is not on Polish territory," Bodnar told Radio Zet.
Earlier, on August 15, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ukrainian officials were involved in the Nord Stream explosion. In particular, it was reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to blow up the pipeline and then tried to revoke the decision but failed after the intervention of the CIA. The operation was said to have taken place under the supervision of former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
The Nord Stream pipeline carries Russian gas to Germany via the Baltic Sea. The Nord Stream 2 pipeline was completed but never put into operation due to Germany's refusal to approve it and Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
