The US proposed a resolution drafted by the country at the United Nations during the three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The US has previously refused to back a resolution drafted by Ukraine and backed by Europe, CNN reported.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described it as "a simple, historic resolution that we call on all member states to support to outline a path towards peace."
"This Resolution is in line with President Trump's view that the United Nations must return to its founding purpose, as stated in the United Nations Charter, to maintain international peace and security, including the peaceful settlement of disputes," Foreign Minister Rubio emphasized.
The top US diplomat noted, through supporting the resolution, we affirm that this conflict is a bad thing, that the United Nations can help end the conflict and make peace a feasible thing.
The US-drafted resolution comes amid US and Russian negotiations in Saudi Arabia. The proposed resolution was also released after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on February 21 "to reaffirm President Trump's commitment to ending the conflict in Ukraine, including through effective action at the United Nations Security Council," said US State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce.
The draft US resolution is quite concise, CNN noted. In particular, the draft expresses condolences for the losses during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, proposes a quick end to the conflict and urges a long-term peace between Ukraine and Russia.
