Speaking at a G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting in the US, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO) and the European Union (EU) have taken advantage of Ukraine to indirectly declare war with Russia. He emphasized that the West is the spearhead of the current conflict.
The statement came after US President Donald Trump praised Ukraine's military efforts and encouraged NATO allies to shoot down airstrikes. However, in his speeches to the press at the Oval Office, Trump maintained a cautious tone, not issuing tougher sanctions against Russia, and expressed disappointment in Moscow's performance in the conflict.
According to Mr. Lavrov, the crisis in Ukraine is a testament to the direct participation of the West. His statement at the United Nations to the G20 foreign ministers has further weighted Russia's stance. He also held talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
Responding to Mr. Lavrov's statement, British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper affirmed that Russia's statements are only distorted and propaganda. Ms. Kaja Kallas - EU foreign policy chief - called on countries to increase pressure on the Kremlin, emphasizing that Russia has not changed its goal of conquering Ukraine.
These developments show that tensions between Russia and the West continue to increase, while Ukraine remains the focus of the confrontation.
