The criminal trial of the former Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol officially started on the morning of April 14, in the Central Court of Seoul.

According to France24, Mr. Yoon - who was deposed after the military law in a short time - faced the rebellious allegations.

Yoon was accused of efforts to overthrow the civil government on January 3, 2024, by deploying armed soldiers to the National Assembly building. This action was strongly opposed by the legislators. They even had to climb over the fence to enter the National Assembly building and vote to reject his military law statement. Under this pressure, Mr. Yoon withdrew the decision within a few hours.

He was suspended from his position and was officially deprived of the president's right to this month. Yoon Suk Yeol became the first incumbent president in Korean history was arrested for related to the criminal case, although later released for procedures.

At the first trial, Mr. Yoon was asked to declare the name, date of birth and other personal information. The judge called him "former president" and asked, "Defendant Yoon Suk Yeol, his current career is the former president, what is his current address?".

The Procuracy summoned two military officers as witnesses, including one who declared that the superior issued "attracting the legislators out of the National Assembly to execute military laws". These testimonies are considered the key to determining the nature and severity of the behavior that Yoon is accused.

Lawyer Min Kyoung-Sic said that this will be a long trial because it involves about 70,000 pages of documents and many witnesses. It is expected that the first ruling may be given around August, but the Court may extend the trial time if necessary.

If convicted, Mr. Yoon can face life imprisonment or the highest sentence is the death penalty. However, the ability to execute the death penalty is very low because Korea has not implemented this project since 1997.
