On August 24 (Moscow time), according to TASS news agency quoting Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya, European countries are currently playing a role as peace-supporting parties but have previously provided military support to Ukraine for many years and encouraged Kiev to reject the Minsk agreements.
Speaking at the United Nations, Mr. Nebenzya said that the participation of European countries in military support for Ukraine has contributed to increasing military and political pressure on Russia. According to him, this is contrary to how some European countries describe their role in the current conflict.
The Russian Ambassador said that these countries once expected a result that he described as Russia's "strategic failure". However, according to him, these countries now affirm that they are not parties to the conflict but are only supporting Ukraine in self-defense.
Mr. Nebenzya said that the above approach raises questions about the difference between providing military support to one side in the conflict and declaring not directly involved in the conflict.
In his speech, the Russian diplomat also mentioned the Minsk agreement, built to create a framework for resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. According to him, European countries once encouraged Kiev to reject previous agreements.
The statements of the Russian Ambassador were made in the context that the issue of supporting Ukraine and the role of European countries continues to be one of the topics discussed related to the conflict. European countries still maintain many forms of support for Kiev, while discussions about the prospects of resolving the conflict continue to take place.
Mr. Nebenzya focused on the difference between the previous policy of supporting Ukraine and the current stance of European countries on promoting peace. According to the Russian diplomat, reviewing this process is necessary to assess the role of Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine.
Currently, European countries have not commented on the above statement.
