The information was revealed by CEO of Russian State Corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev at a seminar of the Russian Ministry of Energy on the development of the national electricity industry.
By the 2030s, we should start transporting components for a nuclear power plant to the Moon. This plant will have a capacity of at least 5kW and an operating life of up to 10 years" - Mr. Likhachev said.
In February 2025, at the Future Technology Forum, CEO of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center Mikhail Kovalchuk reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin that this research center, together with Rosatom and the Russian Academy of Sciences, is developing non-electrode plasma rocket engines for future spacecraft, including missions to the Moon and Mars.
Mr. Mikhail Kovalchuk said that in the future, Russian scientists may use the technologies being developed to ensure the operation of specialized power plants on the Moon. Then, Mr. Kovalchuk informed the press that the first nuclear power plant on the Moon will be ready in 2030.
