On July 27 (local time), the Russian Foreign Ministry warned of the possibility that Japan's deployment of nuclear weapons in the context of this country's accelerated rearmament process could affect Russia's national security and regional stability.
According to Xinhua, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the above comment when commenting on recent statements by the Japanese Defense Minister regarding the need for public discussions on the issue of nuclear weapons.
Ms. Zakharova said that bringing the nuclear issue to discussion cannot be explained by Japan's need for self-defense. According to her, currently no country threatens Japan's sovereignty or territorial integrity.
A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said that if Japan puts nuclear weapons into the rearmament process being promoted, this will create risks to Russia's national security and undermine stability in the region.
The spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry also called on Japan to remember the lessons of history and continue to pursue the path of peaceful development.

The above statements were made in the context of Japan recently increasing investment in defense and adjusting many security policies to respond to the strategic environment that this country assesses as increasingly complex. Some proposals related to deterrence capabilities, including discussing the nuclear issue, have attracted public attention as well as reactions from countries in the region.
To date, the Japanese side has not made official comments on the latest statements of the Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
