Russia attacks Ukrainian capital with missiles and drones

The Russian missile and drone attack shook Kiev on the morning of July 2.

AFP reporters in central and eastern Kiev, Ukraine heard more than ten explosions and saw people running into subway stations used as shelters.

Kiev is being attacked by ballistic missiles and drones" - Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed on Telegram, noting that explosions could be heard throughout the city.

Five medical staff were injured in the Shevchenkivskyi district, one of whom is in critical condition, the mayor added.

The latest attack caused a fire, destroyed a residential building and damaged a medical facility, Tymur Tkachenko - head of the Kiev military government - informed on Telegram.

Hours earlier, an AFP reporter witnessed an explosion in central Kiev during an air strike alert, followed by a cloud of smoke and fire. Firefighters and ambulances were present at the scene.

About 50 minutes later, a second explosion occurred near the initial impact site, causing debris to fly into the air.

The attack took place after the Ukrainian Air Force warned that ballistic missiles were heading towards the capital and after President Volodymyr Zelensky shortened his visit to Dublin on July 1 due to intelligence reports about the possibility of a Russian attack.

Ukraine has also intensified long-range drone attacks within Russian territory in recent weeks, targeting energy infrastructure and military targets.

Russian officials have reported repeated attacks in border areas, while Moscow said air defense systems have intercepted hundreds of drones from Ukraine in recent days.
