German lawmaker Jens Spahn said Germany should have access to the nuclear arsenal of the UK and France, and suggested Berlin cooperate with Paris and London in modernizing these arsenals.
Spahn, leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in parliament, argued that Europe needs a regional nuclear deterrent, in the context of the US nuclear weapons in Europe no longer being able to ensure security.
In an interview with the press, he stressed that this debate could only take place if Germany took the initiative to promote. He said the UK and France could still maintain main control over their nuclear stockpiles, but Berlin needed to join the modernization program to enhance common defenses.
In July, Mr. Spahn mentioned that Germany and Europe should discuss access to French and British nuclear warehouses in the face of what he called a threat from Russia. According to him, countries without nuclear deterrence will become "chess" in global political football.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has warned that Germany could develop its own nuclear weapons in just a few months if it chose this path. Spahn's speech comes as Prime Minister Friedrich Merz's government is pursuing a tougher stance on Russia. After taking office, Mr. Merz pledged an additional 5 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine, and affirmed that Germany was in conflict with Russia, according to RT.
On the Russian side, President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly denied accusations of thus, calling them "unreasonable" and a trick to sow fear. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the increasing anti-Russian sentiment and the trend of mediocrization in Germany could lead to a " quartet of away powers", and accused the West of seeking dominance under democratic cards.
