On August 29, the German government issued an urgent warning to its citizens, requiring them to leave Iran and avoid all trips to the country. The warning was issued in the context of the risk of retaliation from Tehran after Germany participated in activating UN sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program.
Previously, Germany, the UK and France have launched a 30-day process to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran over the dispute over its nuclear program. This move is expected to escalate tensions, especially after 2 months since the US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran.
The German Foreign Ministry said that Iranian officials have repeatedly warned of "consequences" if European countries promote sanctions. This has made Berlin concerned about its interests and that German citizens in Iran could be subject to retaliatory measures.
The announcement emphasized: "It is not ruled out that German interests and citizens will be affected by the resistance moves in Iran." At the same time, the German government warned that the German Embassy in Tehran can currently only provide limited consular assistance.
In the context of uncertainty, Berlin affirmed that withdrawing citizens from Iran is a necessary preventive measure to reduce risks.
