According to allegheny County officials, the explosion at the U.S. coal plant. Steel Clairton in Clairton, about 24km from Pittsburgh, left many people stranded under the rubble.
Of the injured, five are in critical condition but stable, while five others have been taken to the hospital for treatment and discharged, according to officials.
Governor Josh Shapiro said the injured were transferred to local hospitals for care, and search and rescue efforts are still ongoing at the plant.
Mr. Shapiro also expressed his gratitude for the courage of the rescue workers, and prayed for the entire community in Clairton.
Meanwhile, Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi said that only one of the two people killed in the blast has been identified, this person named Timothy Quinn.
According to allegheny County officials, an explosion inside the plant's battery operation area was reported at 10:51 a.m. (local time) on August 11, and several secondary explosions were reported later.
Area CEO Sara Innamorato recommends that local people within a 1.6km radius of the plant stay indoors, close all windows and doors to ensure their health.
Mr. David B. Burritt - Chairman and CEO of U.S. Steel said that the company's representatives worked closely with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident.
