On July 30, at least nine people were killed and many others were injured after a fireworks factory exploded in Muang district, Suphan buri province (Thailand). Among the injured, two are believed to be in critical condition.
However, the number of casualties may continue to increase as many people are still missing and have not been found. Rescue forces confirmed that the factory was completely leveled and that nearby vehicles were also damaged. The scene is being blocked out amid fears of further explosions.
The factory suddenly caught fire at around 11am (local time). The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the investigation team, according to the Suphan buri Provincial Public Relations Office. Provincial Governor Suphan buri, Mr. Piriya Chantadilok and senior police officers of the province were also present at the scene.
Previously, in January last year, Suphan buri province witnessed another fireworks factory explosion in Suan Taeng commune. The incident is believed to have killed 23 people and the number of injured has not been disclosed.
Observers say that factory fires are not uncommon in Thailand. The main reason is believed to be the weak safety regulations in this country.
